Claros Ancient City

Claros Ancient City
Near the village of Ahmetbeyli in the Menderes district of İzmir, Claros, quietly waiting amidst greenery, is no ordinary ancient city; it is one of the most important centers of the ancient world that "whispered the future." This mystical corner of the Aegean was a center of divination (prophecy) where everyone, from kings to commoners, sought to learn their fate for thousands of years.

History Unveiled: The Ancient City of Claros

Although not among the Ionian cities, Claros, considered part of its neighbor Kolophon, was built in honor of Apollo Klarios. The most significant feature distinguishing the city from other ancient cities is that, unlike the temples usually built on high hills, this one was located in a valley floor and by the water's edge.

The Center of Divination: Why Was It So Important?
There were three major centers of prophecy in the ancient world:

Delphi in Greece:
Didyma in Aydın and Claros in İzmir. People came here not only to worship, but also to consult the messengers of the god Apollo before making decisions that would change their lives.

Divination Rituals:
The prophecies took place in a dark and watery room (Adyton) in the lower level of the temple. The oracle would enter a trance by drinking the sacred water and convey the messages received from the god to the visitors in poetic language.

Massive Statues:
The statues of Apollo, Artemis, and Leto, some of which have been restored to their original positions, reveal the artistic splendor of the ancient world. It is estimated that the Apollo statue alone was approximately 7-8 meters tall.

Where Nature and History Meet:
Visiting Claros is not only about examining the stones, but also about breathing in the mysterious atmosphere of that era. Due to the watery nature of the area where the temple is located, you can still encounter water turtles at the excavation site today. Seeing the lists of delegations from cities that came here for oracles on the inscribed columns is fascinating for understanding the social structure of that period.

Did you know? Claros is home to the only Doric temple built in Anatolia. While other Ionian cities generally preferred the Ionic order, the architectural choice here makes it unique.
The ancient city of Claros forms an important part of İzmir's historical heritage. This sacred site, dedicated to Apollo, offers visitors the opportunity to explore the mystery and magic of the ancient world.
