A Journey to Sardes and the Temple of Artemis
Rising near Salihli district of Manisa, at the foot of the Bozdağ Mountains, Sardes (Sardis) is not just an ancient city; it is a magnificent center where the history of world economics changed, and legends intertwined with reality. This ancient city, the capital of the Lydians, invites its visitors today to a history "as rich as Croesus."

In the Footsteps of History and Mythology: Sardis

Sardes took its place in history as the magnificent capital of the Lydian Kingdom from the 7th century BC onwards. As of 2026, with modern conservation efforts and impressive restorations, Sardes continues to be one of the most important cultural stops extending towards the interior of the Aegean.

The Birthplace of Money: Lydian Genius
One of the most important inventions that radically changed world history, "coins," were first minted here, in Sardes. The Lydians, who processed the gold and silver alloy "electrum" brought by the Pactolus (Sart) River, revolutionized trade and made Sardes the richest city in the ancient world. Today, while touring the ancient city, it is possible to feel the remnants of this great wealth in every stone.

Magnificent Structures: Gymnasium and Synagogue
The most iconic image that comes to mind when thinking of Sardes is the Gymnasium-Bath Complex with its massive columns. The magnificent courtyard of this structure, which was the center of education and sports, represents the pinnacle of Roman architecture. Located right next to it, the Sardes Synagogue, one of the largest synagogues in the ancient world, proves with its mosaics and architecture how cosmopolitan and tolerant the city once was.

A Touch of Mythology: King Midas' Gold
Sardes is a favorite not only of historians but also of mythology enthusiasts. According to legend, King Midas, whose touch turned everything he touched into gold, bathed in the Pactolus River, which flowed through the city, to rid himself of this "curse." The gold from Midas's body mixed with the river, filling its sands with gold. This famous gold mine, the source of Lydia's wealth, has been associated with this legend for thousands of years.

Temple of Artemis: In the Shadow of the Bozdağ Mountains
Located a little further up the city, nestled in nature, the Temple of Artemis is one of the largest Ionic temples of the ancient world. With its two massive columns still standing tall, this structure, combined with the rugged mountain scenery behind it, offers a timeless sense of peace.
